Invented by Danish mathmatician Piet Hein in 1936. Also makes hundreds of other 3-D shapes. Do an internet search on "Soma Cube" and check out the web sites dedicated to this puzzle. Pretty amazing. Highly recommmended for ages 6 - 96. Kids really seem to enjoy it, and it develops 3 dimensional thinking skills in all ages (something we don’t get a chance to do much with 2-D computer and TV screens). Great quality in this piece. The workmanship and beauty of this puzzle are something special we think, and combined with the large size makes it quite impressive. Each individual block of the puzzle has a beveled edge, giving it a soft and elegant appearance. It sits in a 3 sided base that will balance on one corner, very unusual and beautiful. Dimensions are about 4 3/8" cube in the base, and weight is about 1.8 pounds. The puzzle itself is very hard, level 5, but instructions are clear.
